Sting Sees a Looming Battle About AI Generated Music

May 18, 2023

Sting, the former lead singer of The Police, has voiced his concerns about the encroachment of artificial intelligence (AI) in the music industry, warning that musicians will face a formidable battle. The 71-year-old musician believes that safeguarding the “human capital” of music will be paramount in the coming years.

In recent times, there has been a surge in the use of AI to replicate the works of renowned musicians and bands, leading to the creation of counterfeit renditions of songs by artists like Eminem, Drake, The Weeknd, and Oasis.

During an interview with the BBC, Sting emphasized the need for artists to actively steer AI tools rather than allowing them to take control. He stressed that the fundamental elements of music belong to us, human beings.

Sting expressed skepticism and boredom with regards to AI-generated songs, drawing a parallel between them and computer-generated images used in movies.

“I get immediately bored when I see a computer-generated image. I imagine I will feel the same way about AI making music,” he argued.

He mentioned that electronic dance music might find some utility in AI, but for songs that convey emotions, he doubted whether they would evoke any personal response.

Sting’s remarks precede his anticipated receipt of the fellowship at the Ivor Novello songwriting awards.

This accolade, the highest honor granted by the organization, makes Sting the 23rd fellow in its 79-year history. His esteemed status places him in the esteemed company of musical luminaries such as Sir Paul McCartney, Kate Bush, Joan Armatrading, Peter Gabriel, and Sir Elton John.

By voicing his concerns, Sting highlights the challenges that musicians may confront as AI continues to permeate the music industry.

He emphasizes the importance of preserving human creativity and emotional expression in music.

Sting’s imminent recognition at the Ivor Novello songwriting awards further solidifies his significant contributions to the music industry, positioning him as a key figure in shaping its future and defending the distinctive artistic contributions that emanate from human ingenuity.
